What Is Geofencing in Time Tracking?
9/15/2026
A geofence is a boundary drawn around a work site. In time tracking, it answers one question: was this punch made at the place the work happens?
How it works
You set a site address and a radius — often 100 to 300 metres, depending on how large the property is. When someone clocks in, their location is compared to that boundary. Inside is normal; outside is an exception.
Exceptions, not punishments
A flagged punch is not proof of wrongdoing. Phone GPS drifts, buildings block signal, and a worker may legitimately start at a gate down the road. Treat exceptions as a short list to review, not an accusation.
Picking a radius
- Small storefront or apartment: tight radius
- Warehouse, campus, construction site: wide radius
- Mobile routes: rely on the punch location rather than a single fence
What it does not do
Geofencing does not track people between punches, and it is not a substitute for supervision. It simply makes your timesheet checkable.
